Shieldbugs of Guernsey

Shieldbugs are Pentatomidae which is a family of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera. I will also include Squashbugs - Coreidae, Rhopalid Bugs - Rhopalidae and Fire Bugs - Pyrrhocoridae, also in the order Hemiptera and quite similar to the Shieldbugs, often being grouped together in field guides.

Guernsey is an ideal location for Shieldbugs with a wide variety of habitats all in a small area. We also act as a migration stop off point where many insects from Southern europe and the continent seem to find themselves, especially after any prolonged periods of East, South East or Southerly winds.

Many shieldbugs are specialist to a host plant and can be found by searching the foodplant. There are however some predatory species.

There are a few species which I have not yet seen, so I hope to add photos of those soon, I have included them in order to provide a full list of Guernsey Shieldbugs
